The MENDENHALL BLAIR HOUSE began building around 1810 by Elihu Mendenhall and his first wife, Anna, just before the start of the Civil War. After the death of his first wife in 1856, Elihu Mendenhall remarried Abigail Hill, headmistress of the Florence Female Academy, in 1858 and both became prominent members of Deep River. Known for their hospitality and their loud support for the abolition of slavery, it is said they provided a safe haven to slaves as part of the Underground Railroad. Abigail, personally and openly, teaching them how to read and write. Although, many attempts were made on their lives and freedoms for their convictions, Slavery was still legal in North Carolina until December 4th 1856, they continued their mission. Elihu Mendenhall, continued serving the community as Chairman of the Building Committee for Deep River Friends Meetings and as chairman of the Board of Trustees of the New Garden Boarding School, now known as Guilford College, until his death. The Blair House, both back then and today, is a symbol of the value of Education, Community and Equality.
